On Tuesday 14th November Egypt’s administrative court placed a ban on Russian imports of wheat found to contain ergot fungus following a lawsuit that began in 2016. From 2010-2016 the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture accepted infected wheat at a limit of 0.05% on imports, an internationally recognised standard.

This decision has now been overturned and a zero- tolerance policy for fungus in feed is now in operation in Egypt. Egypt is one of the world’s largest importer of wheat with roughly one third of this exported from Russia. Click here to read the full story.

Ergot Alkaloids are a naturally occurring fungus produced by the fungi group, the Claviceps species. Most commonly found in grains and feed, the level of infection can range from a few millimetres to more than 4cm and vary depending on the vulnerability of the grain species to ergot infection and the crop host. The fungi are spread primarily by the wind transfer of spores from germinated host plants and its prevalence in certain countries and regions is largely a consequence of climate, when moist, cool conditions are the norm, particularly during flowering of host plants.

Tackling the Problem

Given how ergot spores are spread, it is difficult to prevent the actual spread and eventual contamination. However, there is a method available to test the feed for the infection before it is exported or fed to animals. Randox Food Diagnostics provide screening technology for Ergot Alkaloids on both Biochip Array Technology and a single target ELISA test to screen for the primary toxin Ergotamine at an excellent limit of detection of 1ppb.
